Is The Chosen series historically and/or Biblically accurate ?

Is James Cameron’s Titanic historically accurate? Were Jack and Rose real people?

Nope.. both are the products of incredible imaginations that blend history with a credible storyline that creates a world that is believable and enjoyable. Both are an amazing blend of truth and history with a believable fiction.

Do not not confuse “artistic license” with falsehood or inaccuracy. The addition of “fictional” backstory does not lesson the story or our personal journey. Can we understand and interpret the difference? Can we glimpse a small portion of the ineffable mind of God, via the Son’s teachings reworked for the modern age?

The key is the ability to understand the difference.

This bible study program offered by First Lutheran Church of Cape Cod will review the episodes from “The Chosen” as compared to bible scripture. We will examine the specific bible references included in the series and how the “fictional” backstories enhance or detract from a given scripture. We plan to review the first three seasons of the series and potentially enjoy the fourth season when it premiers in late 2023 or early 2024. Each episode will require approximately two hours of viewing and discussion. We will meet weekly or bi-weekly to tackle each episode. Each season contains eight episodes. We are open to all who wish to explore this series both with faith as well as those who have doubt. All are welcome. Each season has a study guide available in both Kindle and paperback formats, produced by series creator Dallas Jenkins and his wife Amanda. This are recommended but not required. Each episode has available round table videos of discussion available from various viewpoints including the creator Dallas Jenkins. We will examine and decide as a working group which to review.

This is a work in progress. The plan is for a “leader'“ lead discussion. Initially the plan is to have this offering as a in person program. We will explore the option of including “remote” Zoom type inclusion. This study is being offered by Scott Whitney (with support from his wife Sally) current FLC tech geek in residence. He has over thirty years of tech and telecom experience in leading teams, training teams and systems administration. Given a technical background and faith in Christ this should be an interesting endeavor.

postscript: from Scott: any and all help is welcome.

What is “The Chosen

The Chosen is an American Christian historical drama television series created, directed and co-written by filmmaker Dallas Jenkins. It is the first multi-season series about the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth.

The Chosen stays true to the details that are in the text of the New Testament. Each episode takes artistic license to fill in the many blanks where the text does not go into detail, but this artistic license is all feasible considering the details that are provided.

all copyright and acknowlegements to Angel Studios as well as Dallas and Amanda Jenkins. Thank you for an amazing journey.

  • The plot for the first season covers Christ's early ministry when he's still an anonymous Jewish wanderer that the greater Roman Palestine doesn't know much about. The show's story isn't complete, but the first eight episodes cover Christ meeting the first six disciples and Mary Magdalene.

  • Season Two starts just as Christ and the first few apostles were leaving for Samaria and ends just at the beginning of his famous Sermon on the Mount speech that has gone on to be one of the centerpieces of his ministry. Throughout the season, the show addresses multiple major events in the life of Christ, from a retelling of the parable of the lost sheep to depicting Christ casting out the demon Legion from a possessed man. As with most of the first season, the show is mostly cut from whole cloth. The show is dramatizing events and character backstories that aren’t directly addressed or explained in the New Testament but doing so for the purpose of building up the events of the gospels in a human and relatable way.

  • In Season Three, Jesus and the apostles feel the stress of their growing ministry, face greater resistance from Jewish and Roman authorities and deal with greater conflict between themselves, all threatening to undermine Jesus’ ministry. In the two-part season finale, Jesus has to go with his disciples to avert riots and displacement caused by his message and minister to Peter, who resents Jesus for disappointing him.

Series creator Dallas Jenkins wanted to create a series about Christ that could be "binge watched." Jenkins' intention was not only to dig deeper into the people who encountered Jesus and to see Jesus through the eyes of those who met him, but also to show him in a way that is more "personal, intimate, immediate."

  • I Have Called You By Name

In the fishing town of Magdala, 2 BC, young Mary Magdalene is scared and her father reminds her to say the words of Adonai from the prophet Isaiah and together they continue to recite the Scriptures, "Thus says the Lord who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name. You are mine.""[1] 28 years later, in the City of Capernaum, Mary Magdalene wrestles with real demons.

Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee from Jerusalem, is touring the region and heads to Capernaum with his wife for his annual visit to Capernaum Synagogue. Praetor Quintus, a Roman magistrate of Galilee, approaches Nicodemus on the road, demanding help in unpaid taxes.

Matthew, a publican, prepares for work as he deals with the turmoil of being considered a traitor by his fellow Jews. Matthew arrives in the town market and he is escorted into his tax booth by his Roman guard, Gaius.

Meanwhile, Nicodemus complains to the Pharisees of the Capernaum Synagogue and calls out of the sinfulness of the city's fishermen for gambling and fishing on Shabbat, adding that the Messiah will not come until this wickedness is purged. In a Torah room, Nicodemus asks his students, Shmuel and Yussif, regarding why the fishermen are fishing on Shabbat. They are interrupted at a centurion's behest on going to the Red Quarter to help with a demon-possessed woman who causes a disturbance.

Struggling with their tax debts to Rome and in hopes of earning tax money in a secret den, the fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew gamble as Simon engages on a fight with his brother-in-law Jehoshaphat but he loses. Simon decides to go fishing alone on Shabbat to feed his family. The next morning, Simon's wife, Eden, confronts Simon over the incident of the gambling and their distinct traits.

In the Red Quarter, Nicodemus performs an exorcism on "Lilith" but he fails when the demons possessing "Lilith" jeered at him, leaving him shaken. Nicodemus discuss the failed exorcism to his wife, Zohara, and later to his students and states that only God could have healed her.

"Lilith" wakes up on the street after dreaming of her late father again. Having the paper where the Scripture from Isaiah is written, and remembering the death of her father and as well as the Roman officer who sexually assaulted her, she tears off the paper and heads to The Hammer, a tavern.

On the tax day, Andrew is unable to pay taxes to his tax collector, Matthew, and when Matthew begins the process of seizing their property, Simon claims to Matthew that he has an arrangement with Quintus. In The Hammer, Simon tells Andrew that the arrangement is to inform Quintus about his fellow Jews fishing on Shabbat, yet his brother disapproves and considers it as a betrayal. Later that day, Matthew arranges to verify Simon's story with Quintus

Following a suicide attempt, "Lilith" loses hope for her condition until she notices a dove and follows it all the way to The Hammer. She enters the tavern and she encounters Jesus, a craftsman from Nazareth. Jesus then calls Mary Magdalene by name and recites the words of Adonai from the prophet Isaiah, healing and restoring her.

  • Shabbat

Matthew validates Simon's claims with Praetor Quintus, Nicodemus investigates the miracle reported in the Red Quarter, and Mary receives surprise guests at her Shabbat dinner.

In Chinnereth, 948 BC, an Israelite household prepares a Shabbat dinner, with a mother describing the history and tradition of the celebration to her son. The dinner opens with the Eshet Chayil, an ode to the Woman of Valor.

In the City of Capernaum, 26 AD, a recently healed Mary Magdalene works at the hairdressers and decides to start the preparation for her Shabbat dinner. While Mary Magdalene is on an errand, she is seen by Yussif, who reported the miracle to his fellow Pharisees and the Av Beit Din.

Having suspicions on Simon, Matthew meets with Quintus to validate Simon's claims of negotiating with Quintus. Meanwhile, Simon enjoys the temporary reprieve from financial ruin and continues to spy on the merchants, buying drinks for them and his fellow fishermen, Big James and John, the sons of Zebedee. However, Andrew reminds Simon of his responsibilities and what is at stake. That night, leaving his wife Eden behind, Simon, accompanied by a reluctant Andrew, is forced to spy on the fishermen on Shabbat, watching the merchant fleet to see if the merchants will sail.

After receiving word from the Pharisees and the Av Beit Din and learning Mary Magdalene is restored, Nicodemus investigates the reported miracle of the healing in the Red Quarter. On her way to host her Shabbat dinner, Mary Magdalene was found by Nicodemus who asks her how she was healed. Mary Magdalene tells Nicodemus it was Someone else who redeemed her, whose time for men to know has not yet come, but she does not know His name.

On Shabbat, as Mary Magdalene hosts her Shabbat dinner, two of her friends, Barnaby and Shula, arrive. Mary Magdalene receives surprise guests, James and Thaddeus, and ask her if they can join her Shabbat dinner. Mary Magdalene welcomed them and as the four have settled, Mary begins to read the prayer. Then, the Man who healed Mary arrives too, who introduces James and Thaddeus as His students and Himself as Jesus of Nazareth. Simultaneously, Nicodemus hosts his Shabbat dinner with his fellow Pharisees. An ashamed Matthew eats dinner with the dog he found, after trying and deciding not to have dinner with his family. Leaving the dinner that upsets Andrew and Eden, Simon heads to the Sea of Galilee and is approached by the Romans to spy on the merchants again.

  • Jesus Loves The Little Children

On the outskirts of Capernaum, 26 AD, Jesus camps for a few days. A precocious local girl named Abigail stumbles upon Jesus' camp and plays with the craftsman's tools while He is away. When Jesus returns, she observes Him and perceives Him as a kind man.

The next day, Abigail invites her friend Joshua, nicknamed "Joshua the Brave" by Jesus, to come see Jesus for himself. Jesus soon befriends and teaches Abigail and Joshua, as well as the friends they invite in the following days.

Finding Him not dangerous, the children help Jesus on his work. After working, Jesus teaches the children about love, prayer, justice, compassion, faith, and wisdom. When He is asked the reason why he is here, Jesus reveals himself as the Messiah, reciting the words of the prophet Isaiah. Subsequent to Jesus moving camp, Abigail discovers that he left a gift for her.

  • The Rock On Which It Is Built

At the Sea of Galilee, Simon misleads the Romans to save his fellow Jews from being caught. Quintus suspects Simon of duplicity and sends Matthew to follow Simon and to record all he does. The Pharisee Shmuel (Shaan Sharma) tells the other Pharisees of a man in camel skin who performs a baptism of repentance on the Jordan River, but Nicodemus adjourns the meeting when he learns the man doesn't perform miracles. Eden takes in her sick mother, Dasha (Leticia Magaña), to live with them, but Simon confesses they are under threat from Rome. Running from Jerusalem, Andrew claims to Simon that they are saved as John the Baptizer (David Amito) has identified and points out the Lamb of God. Upon hearing this, a confident Simon prepares to fish, yet learns from Matthew that it's his last day as a free man. Later that evening, Matthew spies on Simon spending one last night fishing in a desperate attempt to square his debts. Andrew, Zebedee, Big James, and John arrive to help Simon, but they catch nothing. In the morning, they see someone teaching a crowd on the shore. When their boats land on the shore, Andrew spots a familiar face and recognizes the teacher as the Messiah, Jesus, who asks to preach from their boat. After the sermon, Jesus tells Simon and Andrew to cast their nets and they obey. Suddenly, many fish appear out of nowhere and they catch enough to pay off their debts. Zebedee and his sons promptly assist them, and the boat nearly sinks due to the weight of the fish. Realizing what happened, Simon kneels before Jesus to surrender his faith. Inviting Simon and Andrew to become fishers-of-men, Jesus calls James and John as well. Witnessing the miracle, a shocked Matthew states of its impossibility. Nicodemus visits the recently imprisoned John the Baptizer to ask him about miracles.

  • The Wedding Gift

After three days of searching in Jerusalem, 8 AD, Mary (Vanessa Benavente) and Joseph find the missing 12-year-old Jesus (Shayan Naveed Fazli) teaching in the Temple. In Cana, 26 AD, Mary helps her friend, Dinah, to prepare for Dinah's son's wedding. Nicodemus interrogates the detained John the Baptizer concerning signs and wonders. Simon goes home and tells Eden about the miracle, quitting fishing to follow the Lamb of God. Thomas (Joey Vahedi), a caterer, and his business partner Ramah (Yasmine Al-Bustami), a vintner, prepare the wine for the wedding. Jesus and his students make their way to the wedding while John the Baptizer explains his ministry and Jesus's ministry to Nicodemus. During the wedding, Thaddeus and Little James share with Mary Magdalene, Simon, and Andrew how Jesus called them. At the same time, Thomas and Ramah worry as the wine runs low. Learning the wine is gone, Mary immediately asks her son, Jesus, to intervene on behalf of the bridegroom's family, and she tells the servants to do everything Jesus says. Then, Jesus instructs them to fill the six jars with water and the servants obey, yet Thomas expresses his doubts. Jesus invites Thomas to join him, and seeing the jars are full, Jesus requests everyone to step outside. Subsequently, Jesus signals the start of his public ministry as he prays his readiness to his Father, turning water to wine. When Ramah and the other servants served the wine, the master of the banquet exclaims it as the best wine he has ever tasted, saving the reputation of the bridegroom's family and Thomas' and Ramah's careers. Mary thanked Jesus for the miracle of the wine. Realizing the miracle, Thomas and Ramah accept the invitation to join and meet Jesus in Samaria in 12 days.

  • Indescribable Compassion

A traveler (Stephen Hailo) goes to a pawnbroker but is uncovered and marked as a leper. Matthew and his associate Gaius (Kirk B. R. Woller), a Roman centurion, deliver Simon’s tax payment to Quintus. Nicodemus tries to correct Shmuel for detaining John the Baptizer. On the way back to Capernaum, Jesus and his students befriend an Egyptian named Tamar (Amber Shana Williams). Suddenly, the leper approaches Jesus on the road but the disciples caution Jesus. The leper asks Jesus to heal him and Jesus willingly responds. Jesus cleanses the leper but he tells him to not speak of the miracle. Meanwhile, Simon and Andrew confront Matthew over the miracle of the fish. Jesus and his students head to the house of Zebedee and his wife Salome (Nina Leon). Then Jesus starts to preach and a crowd quickly gathers around the house. The growing mob at the Eastern Slums draws the attention of both the Pharisees and the Romans. After witnessing the healing of the leper on the road earlier, Tamar forces her way through the crowd to help her paralytic friend (Noé de la Garza) meet Jesus. Seeing there's no way to come to Jesus, Tamar and her friends decide to go up on the roof. Tamar's friends remove the roof, letting down the bed of the paralytic. Jesus forgives the paralytic, making Shmuel disturbed. Knowing their thoughts, Jesus states his authority to the Pharisees. Jesus heals the paralytic and the crowd is astonished. While watching the miracle, Matthew writes it down on his tablet. Shmuel quickly calls on the Romans to seize Jesus, but the disciples immediately flee with their Rabbi. An earnest Nicodemus seeks Mary Magdalene to speak with Jesus. While leaving, Jesus sees Matthew afar.

  • Invitations

In the Sinai Peninsula, 13th Century BC, Moses (Stelio Savante) fashions and makes a bronze serpent much to the confusion of his assistant and protégé, Joshua (Advait Ghuge), who reasons that their people are dying from snake bites. In Capernaum, 26 AD, Gaius escorts Matthew to show his gratitude for his promotion. Quintus questions Nicodemus concerning the miracle worker while Jesus agrees to meet with Nicodemus by night. After witnessing the miracles Jesus did, Matthew struggles to reconcile his mathematical understanding of reality and visits her mother, seeking to find answers. That night, Nicodemus arrives at the meeting place with Jesus. In the course of their discussion, Jesus explains the Kingdom of God and being born again. Jesus illustrates himself as the Son of Man, taking an example from Moses and the bronze serpent. Jesus speaks regarding God’s love for the world and his mission to save mankind from sin. As Jesus invites Nicodemus to join him, John writes to record their conversation. Nicodemus worships and glorifies Jesus, declaring Jesus is the Son of God with both reciting a Psalm. In the morning, Jesus and his students pass by Matthew's booth. Jesus calls and invites Matthew to join him. Matthew promptly follows him and accepts his calling. Jesus then leads his disciples to a dinner party.

  • I Am He

In Canaan, 1952 BC, Jacob (Amato D'Apolito) and his sons dig a well in Shechem. In Sychar, 26 AD, Photina (Vanessa De Silvio), a suffering Samaritan woman, fetch water from Jacob's Well. Photina files a divorce paper but her husband declines. At Matthew's dinner party in Capernaum, Jesus answers the questions of the Pharisees, including Yussif (Ivan Jasso), with the words of Hosea. Shmuel petitions Nicodemus concerning false prophecy. Jesus goes to Simon’s house and speaks with Eden on her situation. Jesus then heals Dasha, Simon’s mother-in-law, and she begins to serve them. Learning Matthew left, Quintus issues a decree against religious gatherings outside synagogues. As Jesus and his students complete their preparations and leave Capernaum, Nicodemus leaves money for them. Gaius bequeaths Matthew's wealth to Matthew's father, Alphaeus (Troy Caylak). On the road, Jesus decides to go through Samaria, much to the shock of the disciples, especially Big James (Kian Kavousi) and John. When they arrive in Sychar, the disciples go to town to buy food while Jesus stays at Jacob's Well. There, Jesus meets with Photina and asks her for water. Jesus then offers Photina the living water, he expresses the true worship, and he announces to her that he is the Messiah. After hearing Jesus telling her everything she ever did, Photina believes Jesus is the Christ and tells everyone about him. The disciples return from the town and Jesus publicly launches his ministry.

Season Two

The second season focuses on the beginning of Jesus' public ministry and what happens as word of His ministry begins to spread. See Jesus through the eyes of those that met Him.

  • Thunder

In 44 AD, during the Shiva for the martyred Big James, John takes the opportunity to interview his fellow disciples as he writes their eyewitness accounts for his book. In Sychar, 26 AD, Big James and John plow a field while Jesus continues to teach the Samaritans. Thomas and Ramah arrive in Samaria and they join the group. Tension builds among the disciples as they wrestle with the increasing fame of Jesus in Samaria. Ramah's father, Kafni, expresses his unbelief in Jesus and as he leaves, he blesses her daughter. That evening, Jesus and his students have dinner with a paralyzed Melech, a former robber. Melech shares his story and Jesus comforts him. In the morning, Melech is miraculously healed. After breakfast, Big James and John assume the leadership among the disciples but the others oppose. When Big James and John try to present their plans to Jesus, they come across a group of Samaritans showing extreme hostility towards them. Then Big James and John request Jesus to rain lightning and fire from heaven to incinerate and destroy the Samaritans. Jesus rebukes them for their prejudice and he explains why he is here. After the near-violent encounter, Jesus gives them a new nickname: the Sons of Thunder. Invited to a synagogue to read a scroll of Moses and at John's suggestion, Jesus reads the first scroll of the first book of Moses, and in 44 AD, John remembers it and writes the introduction for his book.

  • I Saw You

In Caesarea Philippi, Nathanael (Austin Reed Alleman), an architect, fails in his architectural project under a Roman commission. In Bashan, Philip (Yoshi Barrigas), a friend of Andrew in his hometown Bethsaida, arrives from Jesus' cousin, John the Baptizer, and seeks to meet Jesus, but the disciples are hesitant. Simon is jealous of Philip as Philip begins to mentor Matthew. A distressed Nathanael sits under a fig tree and grieves his misery, reciting a Psalm, crying, and calling out if the Lord sees him. Hearing nothing, he burns his architectural drawings of a synagogue. That night, Jesus officially calls Philip. At the camp, Thaddeus advises Matthew yet tension builds between Simon arguing with Matthew. On the road, Simon indicates to Jesus to build a structure while Mary Magdalene and Ramah express interest in studying the Torah. As the group heads to a new city, Philip goes first to visit his old friend Nathanael. Philip comforts Nathanael and he tells his downcast friend about the One they've been waiting for their entire lives. Nathanael is skeptical of Nazareth but agrees to meet Jesus. Seeing Nathanael, Jesus said of him as a true Israelite and tells that he saw him under the fig tree before Philip called him. Upon hearing this, Nathanael declares Jesus is the Son of God and the King of Israel, leading to Jesus calling Nathanael too. Simon and Andrew arrive from John with a word that Jesus' fame is growing.

  • Matthew 4:24

In Syria, the disciples take shifts to help Jesus deal with a large crowd hoping to be healed. Philip continues to mentor Matthew while Ramah and Mary Magdalene start to study Torah. A long, exhausting day turns into night as the disciples share how they perceive the Messiah. Jesus' mother, Mary, arrives from Nazareth to help with her son’s students. Around the campfire, over dinner, the group tried to get to know each other better. They discuss their experiences and their inner turmoil, but tensions erupt when Simon disputes with Matthew about being chosen. Tempers flare as sides are taken and the disciples begin to argue, forgetting the purpose of why Jesus chose them in the first place. All of a sudden, an exhausted Jesus says a good night to them and his mother, Mary, attends to him. The disciples listen and watch in shame.

  • The Perfect Opportunity

Jesse (Dennis Apergis), a paralytic, spends 38 years searching for a cure and finally stays at the Pool of Bethesda while his brother, Simon (Alaa Safi), joins the Fourth Philosophy of the Zealots and trains to become one. The Zealots plot to assassinate a Roman magistrate with Simon Z. leading the plan, but Atticus Aemilius (Elijah Alexander), one of the Roman cohortes urbanae, spies on them and discovers their plan. Jesus and the disciples head to Jerusalem to prepare for the Feast of Tabernacles. Atticus Aemilius continues to spy on Simon Z. to bring an end to the Zealot. Assisted by another Pharisee named Yanni (Wasim No'mani) in Jerusalem, Shmuel begins to preach against false prophecy. As they celebrate the feast during a Shabbat dinner, the disciples discuss the scriptures with Jesus. After being informed concerning Shmuel preaching against him, Jesus decides to go to the Bethesda Pool to meet someone and he brings Simon, John, and Matthew. Before executing his mission, Simon Z. visits Jesse to bid goodbye to him. Arriving at Bethesda, Jesus approaches Jesse and asks him if he wants to be healed. Jesus heals Jesse and John writes down the miracle. Witnessing the healing, Yanni and the other Pharisees are upset and admonish Jesse for carrying a mat on Shabbat. When the assassination plan by the Zealots is being carried out, Simon Z. is distracted as he sees Jesse walking. The two brothers reconcile and Atticus Aemilius is bewildered and intrigued. Yanni tells Shmuel about the incident at Bethesda and Shmuel realizes it is Jesus who did the miracle. Jesus withdraws himself and Simon Z. searches for him.

  • Spirit

Seeing a Roman, Mary Magdalene is troubled while memorizing the scriptures. Shmuel and Yanni interrogate Jesse concerning Jesus, leading to them updating the petition to the Sanhedrin. Atticus Aemilius questions Jesse and pursues Simon Z. and Jesus. Searching for the man who heals his brother, Simon Z. has come across a demon-possessed man named Caleb and advises him on his condition. John the Baptizer visits the group and tells Jesus his dangerous mission of going to Jerusalem to call out Herod Antipas' sin for marrying Herodias. John the Baptizer is eager for Jesus to get to work, and discuss with his cousin the realness of what they’ve prepared for. When Simon Z. finds the disciples' camp, the demon-possessed Caleb discovers the camp as well. After Mary Magdalene confronts him, the demoniac attempts to attack the group but Simon Z. tries to suppress him. Jesus returns to the camp and heals Caleb, casting out the demon, Belial, all of a sudden. That day, Simon Z. surrenders himself and is officially called by Jesus. John the Baptizer submits to Jesus and then departs from him to carry out the mission. Devastated by the encounter earlier with the demoniac, Mary Magdalene goes to a tavern in Jericho. Learning Mary Magdalene has gone, Jesus instructs Simon and Matthew to look for her.

  • Unlawful

In Nob, Israel, 1008 BC, as Ahimelech (Marty Lindsey) teaches his son, Abiathar (Major Dodge Jr.), about the shewbread, David (Jorge Franco IV) seeks him out for food. In Jericho, AD 26, Simon and Matthew try to get along as they search for Mary Magdalene in dark places. Matthew and Simon find Mary Magdalene who is ashamed for leaving the camp and going back to her old life, and they convince her to come back. At the camp, Jesus forgives Mary Magdalene for turning back, while the group receives bad news concerning John the Baptizer's arrest by Herod, distressing Andrew. Thomas informs Jesus they struggle with lack of food and the group goes to a synagogue at Wadi Kelt on Shabbat. In the synagogue, Jesus heals a man with a withered hand named Elam (Shaun Bedgood), upsetting the Pharisees Madai and Lamech. As the group leaves, Jesus permits his hungry disciples to eat and pluck grain. The Pharisees criticize them for doing this on Shabbat, and Jesus references David and the shewbread as he declares himself the Son of Man and Lord of the Sabbath.

  • Reckoning

After learning of Jesus's whereabouts from Atticus Aemilius, Quintus sends Gaius to arrest him. As the group prepares for Jesus's upcoming big sermon, Andrew worries bad things will happen. Shmuel returns to Capernaum with Yanni and asks Yussif about Tamar. Gaius detains Jesus and Jesus peacefully surrenders. The disciples lose control as they argue about how to respond. In Jotapata, while seeking information about where Jesus has been taken, Andrew, alongside Philip, encounters Tamar and her healed paralytic friend, Ethan, who offer testimonies of the miracle. Quintus meets with Jesus and questions him concerning his deeds and actions. Seeing that he poses no threat, Quintus releases Jesus with a stern warning. Madai and Lamech meet Shmuel and Yanni in Jotapata and inform them about Jesus. Andrew tells Tamar and Ethan to be silent, supported by a disguised Yussif to warn them of Shmuel. Later that night, Jesus returns to his disciples who ask him how to pray and Jesus teaches them a prayer.

  • Beyond Mountains

A businessman and his apprentice (Luke Dimyan) take advantage of land as they negotiate with the owner. Jesus and Matthew prepare the content of the big sermon. As Tamar joins the group, the disciples continue to bicker amongst themselves. The disciples spread the word of the upcoming sermon and make arrangements for its location on the mount. Shammai (Ric Sarabia), a high-ranking Sanhedrin member and rival of Shimon, is shocked by Shmuel's and Yanni's reports on Jesus. Jesus discusses with Matthew the sections of the sermon, such as salt and light and light of the world, leading to the Beatitudes as the introduction of the sermon. Thousands arrive on the day of the sermon, including some familiar faces. Eden reunites with Simon while Big James and John reunite with their parents, Zebedee and Salome. The businessman and his apprentice, who had helped the disciples acquire the sermon's location, arrive as well. The apprentice meets the disciples once more and introduces himself as Judas. Jesus walks towards the stage as he begins his Sermon on the Mount.

The Way of the Chosen (Volume 3) The Chosen Bible Study Series

Season Three

Seaon Three was well-researched and dramatic, making its source material's most overdone moments feel fresh and full of life. Characters that were only name-dropped in the Gospels were fleshed out with rich personalities and engaging backstories. The messiness of humanity was added to a story that's often sanitized in other adaptations.

The notion of trust is one that the apostles need, and it is something that we all need too. Andrew was told he needed to rest and trust more. As Jesus prepares to send the apostles out two by two, they begin to doubt their abilities and preparation for the mission.  This again is a moment for the apostles to trust Jesus. James, who struggles with an infirmity, and needs healing himself will have a one-on-one encounter with Jesus, where Jesus loves him as a son or brother, and imparts words that lead him to trust in what Jesus is asking. If the apostles needed to trust, we can begin to notice moments of resistance in our life where we need to surrender to God.

  • Homecoming

The Sermon on the Mount convicts the listeners in different ways. Matthew realizes he’ll have to try reconciling with his family, Andrew feels ashamed of yelling at Mary Magdalene when he let anxiety get away from him, Simon turns thoughtful at the urging to love one’s enemies, and Zebedee realizes he is prioritizing earthly treasures at the cost of heavenly gain. Even Gaius appears unsettled, while Atticus seems intrigued.

Greatly moved, Judas quits his apprenticeship and asks Jesus if he can join the ministry, wanting to be part of something so revolutionary. Jesus grants his request, solemnly telling him he will be doing hard things. He calls everyone forward to introduce Judas and thank them for their hard work, before sending them home with His blessing.

Joanna, the wife of Herod Antipas’s steward, has been sent from Machaerus by John the Baptizer, having been moved by the Nazarite’s preaching. Equally convicted by Jesus’s sermon, she sends him John’s love and offers to help finance the ministry, even granting Andrew’s request to bring him to see his old rabbi in prison. Though Ramah thinks her presumptuous, the others are grateful when she gives them a shawl made from priceless Shahtoosh to sell.

Big James is surprised and bit jealous to see John bonding with Thomas, and feels left out of the loop when he learns his brother and parents invited him to stay at their house while the group’s in Capernaum. Simon’s hope of time alone with Eden becomes frustrated when she lets Nathanael and Simon Z. stay in their home, having nowhere else to go, and severely curtailing privacy. Eventually the other two men learn how to keep quiet and in their own room when the couple want to be alone.

Mary lets Ramah and Tamar stay with her, though her apartment proves rather small for three adults. An emotional Matthew drops by for guidance, saying he has no place to stay and hinting that he will be speaking with his estranged parents soon. Mary and Ramah assure him that he’s handling things well and doing the right thing, lifting his spirits as he plans to camp outside the city for the night.

Also moved by the sermon, Yussif has been compelled to write notes about it, as well as Jesus’s miracles and other teachings. While going to request more ink from the synagogue administrator, he learns the previous one transferred and is replaced by a man named Jairus, who has learned discretion when it comes to temple politics and controversial matters. He offers the use of his cellar for sensitive documents, hinting it will be a safe hiding place. Yussif accepts the offer, hinting that Jairus is welcome to read his notes about Jesus.

Meanwhile, Judas puts his affairs in order and visits his married older sister Devorah to let her know his plans. She worries about his safety, reminding him that popular preachers and their followers often face arrest or death, and he is the only family she has left after their parents died. He remains steadfast, insisting Jesus may be the Messiah and eventually free them from Rome. He leaves her with the deed to his house as well as their late mother’s potted mint, and she bids him a tearful goodbye.

"There was Something in There Just for You"

At Machaerus, Andrew is appalled at the conditions John the Baptizer faces in the dungeons, but the other man remains in good spirits, excited about Joanna’s report of Jesus’s sermon. He assures a tearful Andrew not to worry about him, as far more important things are happening and Jesus is his Rabbi now, knowing there was something in His sermon Andrew needed to hear.

When he gets home, Andrew apologizes to Mary, saying she doesn’t deserve the anger and blame he showed her when Jesus was detained. Touched, she forgives him, admitting nobody has ever apologized to her for anything before.

Matthew finally reaches his parents’ house, nearly losing courage before Alpheus answers the door and warmly greets him as “Son”.

  • Two by Two

Several hundred pilgrims who came for the sermon camp right outside Capernaum’s gates in hopes of seeing Jesus again. Atticus and Gaius watch on, the former knowing Quintus will be furious at this development. The latter still appears unsettled by what he heard in the sermon. That night Simon Z. and Nathanael walk through the new shantytown , and Simon Z. worries about the attention this will draw from Rome towards Jesus. They are secretly watched from a distance by a member of his former order.

After an awkward start to the visit with his parents, Matthew cuts right to the chase and acknowledges the selfishness of his actions, hurting not only their people but his family, causing them to be publicly scorned. While expressing a desire to make full restitution, Alpheus assures him he has done enough by leaving his career and joining Jesus, apologizing for disowning Matthew.

When Matthew tearfully asks what changed, they tell him they listened to the sermon also, and express excitement that he is acting as the Messiah’s scribe, with Elisheva telling Matthew he’s different from everyone because God set him aside for a grand purpose. Alpheus returns the key to Matthew’s old mansion, despite his son insisting he will never live in it again, and offers to let him stay with them whenever he’s back in town.

Quintus is just now informed by Gaius and Atticus of the sermon and the pilgrim camp. While he initially plans to have the pilgrims forced out, Atticus suggests he instead redraw the city borders to encompass the camp so he can tax its residents. He takes this suggestion, but is uneasy when Atticus hints that he will be telling Governor Pontius Pilate about the Praetor’s actions.

Thomas announces to Big James, John, and their parents his intentions of asking Ramah’s father for her hand, though there is some difficulty in this as Jewish marriages are arranged between the couple’s families, and Thomas has neither father nor older brother to speak with Kafni on his behalf. Zebedee, meanwhile, has rented an olive press and discovered himself to have a talent for making delicious oil, which can be used for cooking as well as priestly rituals.

Matthew gives his house to the ministry and lets the women stay in it rather than Mary’s tiny apartment. Slight tension arises when they start running low on money for food yet Tamar refuses to sell any of her jewelry for sentimental reasons, and also makes a remark about Mary’s sordid past. They playfully tease Ramah about Thomas's obvious affections, asking if she would like to marry him. Though hemming and hawing with reminders of Jewish engagement customs, she admits to returning his feelings. When she and Mary try to ask Tamar about her own people’s marriage customs, she suddenly gets tight-lipped.

While visiting the well at night, Simon Z. realizes he’s being followed and escapes to a rooftop, where he’s cornered by Atticus. The Roman makes it clear he has no hostile intentions, though reveals he’d been watching him for some time. He admits a longing to understand exactly what Jesus is, and warns him that members from his order have tracked him here with the intent to kill Simon Z. for desertion.

While Simon and Eden are enjoying a rare moment alone, she admits to struggling with loneliness and feeling lost during his long absence, but was able to cope by remembering Jesus acknowledging her role in everything. Believing the group will be staying in Capernaum for a while, they agree it is time to start trying in earnest for children.

Jesus calls a meeting at Simon and Eden’s house, announcing that He’s sending the men out as His twelve apostles to minister two-by-two in order to better spread the ministry, temporarily granting them authority to cast out demons and perform miracles, bidding them to only take the clothes on their backs, relying on God to provide through the hospitality of others. Matthew declines Philip’s nominating him to handle the ministry’s finances again, instead nominating Judas, who accepts.

Jesus assigns pairs and where they should go: Both James’s to Sharon, John and Thomas to Joppa, Andrew and Philip to Naveh, Simon and Judas to Caesarea Philippi, Nathanael and Thaddeus to Perea, and (to everyone’s chagrin) Matthew and Simon Z. to Jericho. Matthew panics at being teamed with a former Zealot, who is only now learning he used to be a tax collector. Jesus reminds Simon Z that none of them are what they once were, he and Matthew most of all. Eden is clearly stricken at being separated from Simon yet again, but won’t let him ask Jesus for a shorter assignment.

As the meeting breaks up, Thomas asks Jesus if he has His blessing to marry Ramah. Jesus reminds him that Joppa is a short distance from Kafni’s home, making it clear He'd assigned him there for that very purpose. Thomas tells Ramah about the mission, and she confesses to knowing his intentions for matrimony, stating she will go ahead of him in hopes of softening her father to the idea.

Little James admits to Jesus that he’s troubled at the thought of healing others while he himself is crippled, asking Jesus why He lets his infirmity remain. Jesus tells him that many will have the testimony of His miraculously healing them, but James is one of the few who have the strength to praise God despite knowing hardship, finding His strength in their weakness. Rather than the burden he sees himself to be, Jesus promises Little James he will do many incredible things in his lifetime, and will find complete healing in eternity.

That evening the Apostles meet in front of Matthew’s old house, and Simon Z. Promises to the other Simon Matthew will be safe with him. Despite their fear, they remind each other Jesus believes them ready. They all recite the third Psalm together, which was created by David while fleeing from his rebellious son Absalom who tried to steal his kingdom.

  • Physician, Heal Yourself

A flashback shows Jesus and Lazarus playing together as toddlers ,and Joseph happily greeting his family on returning home from work.

In the present, Jesus returns to Nazareth for Rosh Hashanah. When He asks where his brothers James and Jude are, Mother Mary awkwardly replies they decided to spend it in Sepphoris (clearly to avoid Him). He updates her on how the ministry and His disciples are faring, confirming her guess that Thomas and Ramah hope to marry soon. He then tells her He needs the box given to Him containing a donkey’s bit and bridle, to which she acts uneasy but says it’s in His old room.

During the following day’s festivities, Jesus and Mother Mary greet Dinah and Rafi, who have been telling everyone about His wine miracle. They also reunite with Lazarus and his sisters, visiting from Bethany. The siblings have heard about Jesus’s miracles, and that some believe He’s the Messiah, and Lazarus suggests they discuss this in detail later.

The others ask if he’s claiming to be more than a mere Rabbi and request He perform the signs and wonders they’ve heard about, but He states that a prophet is never accepted in his hometown, as it’s often easier to accept incredible or hard things from strangers rather than someone a person knows well, and finds underwhelming.

The Rabbi and congregation start getting angry when He continues saying that they need to be released from spiritual debt despite being the descendants of Abraham, as one can only be saved if they know themselves to be captive. As example he cites the widow of Sidon Elijah helped rather than the thousands of Israelite widows during a famine, and Elisha healing the Syrian general Naaman of leprosy rather than the thousands of lepers in Israel, because both gentiles recognized their need and obeyed.

When asked if He is claiming to be the Messiah, Jesus confirms that He is. Only His mother and the Bethany siblings believe Him, while the others, including Rafi and Dinah, are appalled. Rabbi Benjamin tries to get Jesus to recant His claim, but He will not, and is declared a false prophet, a crime punishable by death. Lazarus keeps trying to diffuse the situation, but Jesus asks him to take care of His mother before He is taken away to the outskirts of town.

The mob brings Him to the top of a cliff with the intention of throwing Him over, but Jesus states that He is not dying “today”, and walks away through the crowd, who only watch in stunned silence.

He visits Joseph’s tomb, knowing He will never see it again, and remembers when Joseph taught Him the passage in Isaiah He read and gave Him the donkey’s bit and bridle that had been passed down through the family since the Exodus, as a symbol of God leading His people to freedom. Lazarus and Mother Mary find Him there, with the latter bringing the bridle. They agree that Jesus can never return to Nazareth and Mary should stay with the Bethany siblings for a while. When Lazarus asks about the bit and bridle, Jesus tells him he’ll know what it’s for soon enough.

  • Clean, Part 1

The apostles fulfill their mission, shocked and amazed to see themselves perform miraculous healings, deliverance from demons, and knowing what words to say when preaching. They are mostly successful, except for Andrew and Philip who get thrown out of Naveh after angering gentiles and Hellenized Jews alike.

When they return after several weeks, Capernaum’s cistern is broken and sewage mixes with the water supply. Quintus’s way of fixing the matter is inefficient, so Yussif offers to use family connections in Jerusalem to get supplies and having the locals repair it themselves. In the meantime, everyone must journey to a well far out of town, as the lake’s water is unsuitable for most tasks.

Simon surprises Eden at home. Though happy to see him, she’s also strangely reserved, and is hurt when he immediately plans to nap and have the boys over for dinner the following day without consulting her, not offering to help with anything nor aware she clearly wants to talk with him about something. She meets a pilgrim named Veronica who’s working as a laundress and shows Eden to a hidden spring closer to town.

Eden learns the other woman has an incurable illness that’s made her bleed for 12 years, leading to estrangement from her own family due to continuous impurity, yet still holds hope for a cure. Eden hints that she herself has been going through a hard time lately, and shows none of her earlier enthusiasm when the ministry or the sermon is brought up.

In Matthew’s old mansion, tension between Mary Magdalen and Tamar has been growing, with the latter acting somewhat pushy, critical, and still refusing to sell her ancestral jewelry for needed funds. Zebedee drops by to have them taste the latest batch of olive oil, which proves to be expertly strained but bitter. Tamar figures out that the problem is in the olives he used, then gets the idea to use their funds to start an olive oil business that could finance the ministry, though Mary is rather dubious about this.

After reading through Yussif’s notes and old prophecies, Jairus is coming to recognize Jesus as the Messiah, and worries with Yussif on how their religious leaders will react to Him. When his daughter Nili suddenly gets seriously ill from the polluted water, he beings to wonder if God is punishing him for these thoughts.

While gathered at Simon and Eden’s house, the Twelve (Except for Thomas,, who 's gone to meet Ramah's Family) describe their journeys and debate exactly what it all meant, some of them disturbed at gaining such power without understanding. While Simon senses Eden is upset about something, she denies anything is wrong, leaving him distracted. Andrew also senses something amiss with the couple, but they both brush off his concerns.

In Jerusalem, Rabbi Shammai proposes to the Sanhedrin a new decree exacting stricter measures against false prophets and anyone invoking a messianic title. Shmuel is pleased to note most members approve, only to learn it still isn’t enough to have Jesus detained yet, to his frustration. When Veronica returns laundry to a customer, he spies blood running down her leg and makes a scene about her impurity, causing her to break down into tears.

Simon finally asks Eden if he did something to upset her, to which she angrily replies it is something he hasn’t done, and gets strangely terse when he brings up the subject of her menstrual cycle. Jesus and a few other disciples suddenly drop by, trying to hide from a group of frantic pilgrims who then mob the house. Fed up, Simon storms off and ends up at the synagogue.

He runs into Gaius, who is surprised to see him walking around without Jesus nearby. Simon asks why the Romans haven’t fixed the cistern yet, and Gaius says Quintus doesn’t want to pay for it. Both men form a surprising rapport over their shared frustration over the matter, and Simon lets slip he is a little frustrated with his Rabbi and having trouble at home. The two agree to start repairs on the cistern themselves when the supplies Yussif ordered come in tomorrow.

That evening at Jairus’s house, his wife Michal checks on Nili, and suddenly screams for her husband.

  • Clean, Part 2

A flashback reveals Eden had a miscarriage two weeks prior that nearly took her life, with only Dasha and the doctor aware she was ever pregnant.

In the present, the same doctor examines Nili after she’s taken a turn for the worse and sadly informs her parents she doesn’t have long to live. While Jairus struggles to accept this, he begs that the necessary funeral arrangements be halted while she’s still alive and hurries to the synagogue.

Before heading out to work on the cistern, Simon tries Gaius’s advice and apologizes to Eden for “Whatever it is”, but the vagueness of his apology doesn’t placate her. Both her anger and fear of Simon’s pain have kept her from telling him about the baby yet.

Zebedee tells his sons that he’s sold his fishing boat and will now devote his time to the oil business along with the women. When asked if it was because they’ve been gone so much, he assures them that he only fished to provide for the family until they found their calling, and now that they are doing something new, so can he.

While returning from the well out of town, Nathanael and Thaddeus happen upon a trail of blood, and follow it to Veronica at her campsite. They offer to help her, with Nathanael suggesting Jesus can heal her. At first frightened of facing another charlatan healer, she realizes He is the Rabbi she’s been looking for, and having heard about Him from a former paralytic, stating just touching His garment will be enough to heal her.

Judas accompanies Zebedee and the women to buy an olive grove, but the trees prove to be sickly. They find the former caretaker’s son, who says his father has been too ill to care for it lately. Judas negotiates for the young man to teach Zebedee how to care for the trees in return for a small amount of the first profits.

While at work, Simon tells Gaius that his advice didn’t work, to which Gaius says he needs to know what it is he’s apologizing for first. He tells Simon that he and his wife are raising the son of a deceased maidservant along with their own child, and seems rather sensitive on the subject.

At Simon and Eden’s house, Jesus and some of the disciples discuss fasting, as He has never required it of His followers, unlike other rabbis. He tells the parables of the Bridegroom and Wineskins, telling them new ways of life will not fit into old frameworks and they have no need to mourn while He is still with them, hinting that He will be taken away. Sensing Eden’s pain, Jesus tries to make her feel appreciated and included in the conversation, to which she’s only partly receptive.

Jairus tells Yussif about the situation at home and begs to be taken to Jesus. The best Yussif can do is take him to Andrew’s house, where they meet Judas. Though initially wary, he’s moved by Jairus’s pleas to point them towards Simon’s house. Jairus tells Jesus he knows Who he is and that he can heal his dying daughter, and Jesus is moved by his faith despite never having met Him. He agrees to go, and everyone heads out while Eden appears triggered by seeing Him rush to save someone else’s child.

While Simon and Gaius are discussing their respective cultures and religions, they notice a commotion beginning in the street. John and Big James alert Simon that Jesus is about to perform another healing and they join the others as a thick crowd of pilgrims forms and hinders the progress to Jairus’s house. Simon Z. is startled to recognize a member of his former order in the crowd, but the Zealot disappears in the confusion.

Thaddeus and Nathanael come along with Veronica and try to catch their Rabbi’s attention, but are unable to and apologetically tell her to try tomorrow. In desperation at being so close, Veronica works through the crowd despite her impurity and manages to briefly grasp the tzitzit hanging from Jesus’s tunic. He suddenly halts as power goes out from Him and asks to know who touched Him, to which Simon incredulously points out the crowds pressing around Him.

Veronica confesses to the act, apologizing for not asking first but tearfully confirming she’s been healed. Touched, Jesus tells her He’s been blessed by her faith, and that it was what healed her rather than His garment, calling her “Daughter”. Before continuing with Simon and the Sons of Thunder, He asks the women and other apostles to stay with Veronica to make sure nobody troubles her.

Flutes and professional mourners greet Jesus and the other men when they arrive, with another rabbi sadly informing Jairus Nili passed while he was gone. Jesus states that she is only asleep and it is not too late, and asks the rabbi and mourners to leave, despite their protests. While a distraught Michal yells at Jairus for leaving, Jesus approaches Nili’s body and bids her to rise, and both parents watch in shocked joy as she is immediately restored to perfect health. While the family thanks Jesus, He asks them along with Simon, John, and Big James to tell nobody what happened yet to protect the family.

Veronica burns the menstrual rags and joyfully immerses in the Sea of Galilee, finally clean again. Jesus and the apostles greet her as they also immerse themselves after the other rabbi heard they touched Veronica or else Jesus after He touched her. She apologizes for the scene she caused, which Jesus calls a welcome interruption. As the men end up cavorting in the water, Tamar and Mary ask Veronica how she endured those twelve years, which she says is a long story. Eden watches everyone from a distance, struggling to feel happy for everyone despite her own pain.

  • Intensity in Tent City

Pontius Pilate and Atticus discuss Quintus, lamenting the Praetor's excessive use of force, but admitting its effectiveness in collecting money. Pilate wants to appease both the Romans and the Jews. Simon Z is confronted by the zealots, who chide him for claiming Jesus as the Messaih while the Romans still hold power. However, the zealots are impressed after witnessing Jesus's miracles, and realize Simon Z has not been faithless after all. Two disciples of John the Baptizer ask Jesus if he is the true Messiah, but Jesus simply tells them to report to John what they have seen. Later, Jesus cures Shula's blindness and Barnaby's leg. Leander, a man who witnessed Andrew and Phillip preaching in the Decapolis, comes to Capernaum to report the unrest they caused and to implore them to return and restore peace. Mary Magdalene and Tamar reconcile when Tamar explains that her jewelry is all she has left of her slaughtered family. The women discover how to fertilize Zebedee's olive grove to produce higher quality fruit. Eden reveals her miscarriage to Simon, who is broken hearted at the loss of a pregnancy he didn't even know about.

  • Ears To Hear

During Purim, Simon is distraught over Eden's miscarriage, and wanders into the Roman Quarter of the city. Gaius brings him to his home where they encounter his servant's sick son, later revealed to be fathered by Gaius. Matthew explains the significance of the Tzitzit that Mary Magdalene found at his house: a dying man's last thing of value given to pay for his children's tax debt – but kept by Matthew as a reminder of his sins against his own people. Matthew learns of the tassels' religious significance and ties them to his robe. Andrew and Phillip explain how the people they preached to misinterpreted the Parable of the Great Banquet, and the group decides to travel to the Decapolis. Jesus asks John to remain behind to bring Simon when he returns. Several groups confront Jesus as they reach their destination, many upset about his teaching. Eventually, Simon confides in John about Eden, and questions why Jesus didn't intervene in his case.

  • Sustenance

Confronted by fractious groups at Decapolis, Jesus performs a healing and gets the multitude to settle and listen. Jesus teaches the multitude into the night, and the next day feeds them all from a few loaves and fishes. Eden confesses to Salome and Mary about her miscarriage, and Salome takes her to Yussif for rabbinical aid. Yussif comforts her with a Psalm. Having been alerted to Jesus's presence, Shmuel and his comrades arrive from Jerusalem and attempt to gather witnesses against Jesus. Simon acquires a boat for their return to Capernaum, Jesus tells them to go while he takes some private time. Shmuel comes face to face with Jesus, who invites him along to pray. That night, the Twelve are caught by a storm in the sea. With the boat nearly foundering, Jesus approaches through the storm. The Twelve initially take it for a ghost, but Simon reveals it is Jesus. Simon walks out on the water, wavers and sinks, but is pulled up by Jesus. Jesus tells Simon to keep his eyes on Jesus, and comforts him as Simon finally grieves the loss of his unborn while Jesus commands the storm cease.
